Rapid Surge in Local Interest in Korean Feminism's '4B Movement'

Following the victory of former President Donald Trump in the U.S. presidential election, foreign media reported that American women are paying attention to the Korean feminist movement known as the '4B (Non-) Movement.' The 4B movement originated in some Korean women's communities and aims to reject incorporation into the patriarchal system through non-marriage, non-childbearing, non-dating, and non-sexual relationships.

On the 8th (local time), foreign media such as The Washington Post (WP) and The Guardian reported that American women, frustrated by Trump's return to the White House despite his history of misogynistic remarks and sexual offenses, are expressing their resistance through Korea's 4B movement. Women disheartened by the comeback of the 'misogynistic president' are even showing movements to 'boycott' all white heterosexual male groups who supported Trump’s election.

Locally, it is spreading under terms like '4 Nos' or '4B Movement.' On social media platforms such as TikTok on the day the election results were announced, posts tagged with hashtags like '#4b,' '#4bmovement,' and '#4bmovementusa' are rapidly spreading. Most of these posts introduce Korea's 4B movement or express intentions to join it.

On the 6th alone, 200,000 people searched for this term on Google. The Guardian reported that on the 6th, searches for the 4B movement surged by 450% on Google, especially in Washington D.C., Colorado, Vermont, and Minnesota.

The 4B movement among American women arose from threats to self-determination and reproductive rights (the right of women to make decisions about childbirth). Trump has consistently expressed strong support for restricting abortion rights.

On the opposing side, voices mocking or expressing discomfort with this movement have also begun to emerge. One male TikTok user sarcastically said, "Women participating in the 4B movement will reduce abortion rates more than us banning abortion. Conservatives will win again."
