Seodaemun-gu, Seoul (Mayor Lee Seongheon) is jointly hosting the "21st Yonsei Science Concert" with the College of Science at Yonsei University on the 30th of this month.
This event began in 2015 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the founding of Yonsei University's College of Science and has established itself as a model case of industry-academia cooperation programs, attracting high interest from local residents at every session.
The first part of the science concert, held from 11:00 AM to 1:10 PM in Room 111 of the Yonsei University Science Building, features Professor Choi Jeong-il from the Department of Computational Science and Engineering at Yonsei University, who will give a lecture titled "Digital Twin: Virtual Technology Connecting Natural Science and Engineering." Professor Choi will explain the "virtual technology" that helps solve complex problems easily by reproducing the real world identically in virtual space.
In the second part, Professor Kim Won-seok from the Department of Earth System Sciences at Yonsei University will meet the audience with a lecture titled "The Silent Sea: Protecting the Disappearing Land." Professor Kim will examine the geological causes of land loss through the case of land erosion in Louisiana, USA, due to global warming, and introduce countermeasures.
The program can accommodate 150 participants including children (5th to 6th graders in elementary school), adolescents, and adults. Applications can be made for free on a first-come, first-served basis starting at 9:00 AM on the 13th of this month through the Seodaemun-gu Lifelong Learning Portal.
Mayor Lee Seongheon said, "Through the high-quality lectures by Yonsei University faculty, we expect to enhance natural science literacy and especially provide youth with opportunities to explore university majors and career paths."
The district plans to expand the "Yonsei Science Concert" from twice a year to three times a year starting this year and will select lecture topics based on empathy with participants through surveys and other feedback.
