Installation of 'Diagonal Crosswalk' at Guro-gu Office Intersection

Simultaneous Operation of All Pedestrian Signals at Intersections... Reducing Wait Times and Walking Distances

On the 8th, Guro-gu announced that it installed a diagonal crosswalk at the Guro-gu Office intersection in collaboration with the Seoul Metropolitan Government (Traffic Operations Division) to enhance pedestrian safety and convenience.

A diagonal crosswalk connects the intersection diagonally. While existing crosswalks require pedestrians to cross twice to go diagonally, the diagonal crosswalk activates all pedestrian signals simultaneously, reducing pedestrians' waiting time and walking distance.

Additionally, if pedestrians are crossing, vehicles cannot enter the diagonal crosswalk from any direction, which helps prevent traffic accidents such as right-turn collisions within the crosswalk.

At the Guro-gu Office intersection, pedestrians previously had to cross two crosswalks?horizontal and vertical?to go diagonally, making it necessary to improve the pedestrian environment for enhanced safety and convenience.

Accordingly, construction began on September 20 and was completed earlier this month. During construction, temporary passageways were installed at the site, and pedestrian safety assistants were deployed.

Shade trees with a natural environment were planted in the pedestrian waiting area in front of the crosswalk to provide shade.

Unlike traditional tents that only provide shade, these shade trees play a long-term role in responding to climate change issues such as fine dust and heat waves.

The planting locations were selected after comprehensively considering factors such as drivers’ visibility, pedestrian pathways, traffic signals, and road signs. As the foliage grows denser over time, it is expected to contribute to the urban landscape as well.

Furthermore, to enhance pedestrian safety and prevent right-turn traffic accidents, integrated remaining time indicators for red and green signals and ground-level pedestrian signals will be additionally installed within this month.

A Guro-gu official stated, “The Guro-gu Office intersection has a high demand for pedestrian crossing, so the improvement effect of the diagonal crosswalk is expected to be very significant. We will continue to prioritize pedestrian safety and create a safe and comfortable walking environment.”
