In the situation where the possibility of tariff increases on Chinese products has grown due to former President Donald Trump's victory in the U.S. presidential election, the Chinese government reaffirmed its principled opposition.
Mao Ning, spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said at a regular briefing on the 7th, in response to the question "How will China respond to President-elect Trump's tariff threats on Chinese products?" that "In principle, there can be no winners in a trade war, and it is not beneficial to the world, a position we want to reiterate."
Regarding the question, "President-elect Trump said, 'Chinese President Xi Jinping knows I am crazy, so he will not invade Taiwan.' What is China's position?" Mao said, "The Taiwan issue is the most important and sensitive issue in China-U.S. relations."
He added, "China firmly opposes any form of official U.S.-Taiwan exchanges, and this position is consistent and clear," emphasizing, "The U.S. government should duly adhere to the 'One China' principle and the three China-U.S. joint communiqu?s, and handle the Taiwan issue prudently to avoid seriously damaging China-U.S. relations and peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait."
Earlier, the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs posted a written statement on its website around midnight (local time) on the same day, stating, "We respect the choice of the American people," and "We extend our congratulations to Mr. Trump on his presidential election victory."
