Daytime Population 419,946... 8.1 Times Registered Population
Helps Secure 'Government Grants'... Focus on Alternative to Regional Disappearance
The resident population of Damyang-gun, Jeollanam-do, which is gaining attention as the "No. 1 inland tourism destination," is 8.1 times larger than the registered population, ranking first among population extinction areas in Jeollanam-do.
According to the Ministry of the Interior and Safety and Statistics Korea's Q2 resident population announcement on the 7th, Damyang-gun's resident population recorded 419,946 people. This is an overwhelming first place among the 16 population extinction areas in Jeollanam-do. The registered resident population is 45,031, and the registered foreign population is 1,062, making the resident population 8.1 times larger than the registered population. This result is analyzed to be due to the very high proportion of the staying population visiting Damyang, the No. 1 inland tourism destination in South Korea, compared to the registered population.
The resident population includes not only the registered resident population and registered foreign population but also all staying populations who have stayed in the area for more than 3 hours a day on at least one day per month. It is a concept that considers not only the settled population but also people who stay in a specific area for a certain time and frequency as the population of that area, drawing attention as an alternative to prevent local extinction in depopulated areas.
In particular, since 2025, the government has decided to reflect the "resident population" in the calculation criteria for the general grant tax distributed to local governments, which is expected to help secure local budgets.
Lee Byeong-no, the mayor of Damyang-gun, emphasized, "The resident population has recently attracted attention as an alternative to prevent local extinction and has a very significant impact on the local economy," adding, "We will continue to develop tourism content such as the Southern Region Wide-area Tourism Project to increase staying tourists and expand the resident population."
