"1.16 Million Participants Over 4 Years"…Samsung Electro-Mechanics Hosts the 4th Pureun Elephant Forum

On the Theme of 'Normalization of Cyberbullying, Sustainable Responses and Vision'

Samsung Electro-Mechanics announced on the 7th that it held the '4th Pureun Elephant Forum' the day before at the Samsung Financial Campus to discuss measures to prevent cyberbullying and to present the achievements of the Pureun Elephant project.


'Pureun Elephant' is a project that fosters 'prosocial competencies' such as honesty, promises, forgiveness, responsibility, consideration, and 'the spirit of ownership that distinguishes between mine and yours' among adolescents, and supports the healing of students who are victims of cyberbullying. The project is hosted by Samsung Electro-Mechanics, with participation from Samsung Electronics, Samsung Display, Samsung SDI, Samsung SDS, Samsung Biologics, and Samsung Bioepis. From 2020 to 2024, the cumulative number of students participating in education and counseling, as well as teachers and parents involved in campaigns, reached approximately 1.16 million. The target number of participants for the Pureun Elephant project by 2029 is a total of 3 million.

Considering the COVID-19 pandemic, the Pureun Elephant Forum has been held online from the first forum in 2020 until last year, and this year marks the first offline forum. At the forum, Lee Ju-ho, Deputy Prime Minister for Social Affairs and Minister of Education, and Jo Ji-ho, Commissioner of the National Police Agency, delivered congratulatory messages via video. Other attendees included Shin Young-sook, Vice Minister of Gender Equality and Family; Jo Joo-eun, Head of the Women's Safety and School Violence Countermeasures at the National Police Agency; Kim Hyung-chul, Vice Chairman of Community Chest of Korea; Park Gil-sung, Chairman of the Pureun Tree Foundation; Jang Deok-hyun, President of Samsung Electro-Mechanics; as well as about 250 students, teachers, and experts.


This year's Pureun Elephant Forum was held under the theme 'Normalization of Cyberbullying, Sustainable Response and Vision,' featuring a keynote speech on international responses to cyberbullying, case presentations from victims and perpetrators of cyberbullying, and presentations on the cyberbullying prevention effects and socio-economic impacts of the Pureun Elephant project. Through the cases of those who experienced cyberbullying, the forum highlighted the reality and seriousness of the issue, with various experts and stakeholders pooling their capabilities and experiences to provide diagnoses and recommendations.


Jang Deok-hyun, President of Samsung Electro-Mechanics, said, "Samsung started the Pureun Elephant project with the hope that adolescents would develop the capacity to respond to the cyber world and grow up safely," adding, "We will continue to work closely with the government and civic organizations to prevent and eradicate youth cyberbullying."
