Gyeonggi-do Announces Joint AI Declaration with 9 Local Governments Worldwide

Gyeonggi Province attended the '1st DETA’s Ministerial Summit' held on the 6th (local time) in Barcelona, Spain, and together with nine local governments worldwide, including Massachusetts (USA) and Occitanie (France), announced a joint declaration on artificial intelligence (AI) and discussed international cooperation and ethical development plans in the AI field.


DETA (Disruptive Emerging Technology Alliance) is a global council launched to secure influence and promote exchange in the field of innovative technologies, with local governments from 17 countries as members. Gyeonggi Province joined in January this year and participates in the AI division (14 member countries).


At the summit, Gyeonggi Province drew attention by presenting various policies on the current status of the AI industry, improving residents' quality of life using AI, promoting the AI industry, and enhancing administrative services.


The summit was hosted by Catalonia, the chair of the local government council (DETA) for 2024-2025, and delegations from nine local governments introduced their countries' policies and best practices related to new technologies.

In particular, on this day, each delegation announced the 'Declaration for Trustworthy AI Development,' jointly drafted by member governments for the ethical development of AI technology, officially expressing their commitment to cooperation on AI ethics to the international community.


During the roundtable discussion, the ethical use of emerging technologies including AI and future cooperation plans of the DETA alliance were addressed.


Gyeonggi Province introduced policies it is promoting, such as the 'Ordinance on Establishing an AI Ethics Foundation' and 'Trustworthy AI Development,' and exchanged opinions on international cooperation measures to realize global AI ethics.


Kim Ki-byeong, Director of the AI Bureau of Gyeonggi Province, stated, "Through this summit, Gyeonggi Province has laid the groundwork to lead international cooperation in the AI field," adding, "We will continue collaborative activities with governments worldwide for AI development and strengthen a global network for not only technological advancement but also ethical and responsible use of AI."
