Yangsan City Central Library in Gyeongnam will hold a total of three Han Kang reading sessions starting in November to commemorate Han Kang's Nobel Prize in Literature win and to respond to the widespread enthusiasm for reading culture.
This "Time to Read Han Kang" reading session will be operated with added expertise by inviting a cultural critic instructor (writer Kim Eungsuk, recipient of the 2024 Dongseo Literature Award Grand Prize). Each session will select a different representative work of Han Kang, and participants will engage in deep discussions led by the instructor, taking turns sharing their thoughts to expand their thinking.
The three selected representative works for the reading sessions are Han Kang's best-selling novels: The Vegetarian, Human Acts, and White Book. Each session is divided into two parts: in the first part, the instructor will give a lecture on the selected work, and in the second part, an in-depth reading discussion about the work will be held with the instructor.
In addition to discussing the works, the sessions will also cover an in-depth exploration of Han Kang as a person, the author's expressive techniques and literary values, and the development direction of Korean reading culture.
Participants for the reading sessions will be recruited on a first-come, first-served basis, with 15 people per session (total of three sessions). Applications will open on November 11. It is possible to apply for multiple sessions.
Citizens who wish to participate can apply through the city library website or by phone. If there are available seats, on-site applications on the day of the session are also possible.
