"Had No Capacity to Win Lawsuit at the Time"
"Choi Min-hwan Proceeded with Divorce Agreement in 3 Days"
"Even If It Becomes a Long Battle, I Want to Bring the Children Back"
Yulhee, a former member of the group Laboum, revealed her feelings about proceeding with a divorce lawsuit against her ex-husband, FT Island’s Choi Minhwan.
On the 5th, Yulhee appeared on TV Chosun’s "Now Alone" and explained the reasons for Choi Minhwan’s fault and the process that led her to decide on the lawsuit. She said, "There was fault on the other party’s side one year before the divorce, and since we have children, I thought I could overcome it," but added, "When I felt I couldn’t overcome it, I realized the emotional gap was deep, and we decided to divorce for each other’s sake. I worried a lot about the children’s issues, and considering the financial situations of both my family and my in-laws, I gave custody of the children to my husband," she confessed.
She continued, "The reason I appeared on 'Now Alone' is because I was upset that the public’s perception of me as a mother is very different from the life I have actually lived," and said, "I have never failed to fulfill my responsibilities as a mother. I did not want to reveal the other party’s fault more than anyone else," she lamented. Regarding the reason for agreeing to zero child support and zero property division at the time of divorce, she explained, "I was so exhausted during the year after the other party’s fault that I had no time to think rationally," and added, "I didn’t have the knowledge to argue about custody, alimony, and so on. I felt tired, distressed, and mentally unstable, so I could only become smaller and smaller."
She then confessed, "When the topic of divorce came up decisively, I accepted Choi Minhwan’s suggestion to have an uncontested divorce," and said, "I didn’t have the strength to win a lawsuit. Three days after Choi Minhwan brought it up, he said we should go to court and proceed." She later expressed her determination regarding the belated divorce lawsuit, saying, "I will live my life diligently to be a proud mother to my children and try to be by their side."
The lawyer who spoke with Yulhee said, "If the divorce had been finalized last December, it has not even been a year yet," and added, "Claims for alimony are possible within three years of divorce, and property division is possible within two years of divorce." He continued, "The aftereffects of divorce usually last about three years," and advised, "She gave birth to three children and lived together for five years, so that period has all passed. She needed to properly conclude that chapter." He also suggested filing a petition to change custody, saying, "Custody depends on whether Yulhee has stable housing and a secondary caregiver," acknowledging the difficult situation. In response, Yulhee said, "I am trying to get a grip on things even now. I didn’t want to fight as much as possible and wanted to end things amicably, but I think it’s better than not trying at all," and confessed, "I didn’t even try a year ago. Even if it becomes a long battle, I want to bring the children back."
Earlier, on the 24th of last month, Yulhee claimed on her YouTube channel that Choi Minhwan frequented entertainment establishments and engaged in prostitution, which became the decisive reason for the divorce. At the end of the video, a recording was released in which Choi Minhwan was heard telling an acquaintance, A, "They say there are no girls here today," and "Can you book a hotel where we can go now? A motel is fine too," causing a stir. Subsequently, on the 4th, it was revealed that Yulhee had filed a mediation request at the Seoul Family Court for custody change, alimony, and property division claims.
