Yeo's 'Yoon Term Reduction Constitutional Amendment Coalition' Launches... "Direct Power Reclamation"

The Democratic Party of Korea and the Party for Justice and Innovation have formed the 'Term Reduction Constitutional Amendment Lawmaker Alliance' to push for a constitutional amendment that shortens President Yoon Seok-yeol's term by two years.

The alliance held a press conference at the National Assembly Communication Office on the 1st, stating, "We will create a new history of the era of popular sovereignty where the people who elected the national power can directly dismiss it," and emphasized, "If an incompetent, irresponsible, and ignorant president wields power for himself and his family, the people must be able to directly reclaim the power entrusted to him."

At the press conference, Democratic Party lawmakers Min Hyung-bae, Kim Yong-man, Moon Jung-bok, Jang Kyung-tae, and Party for Justice and Innovation floor leader Hwang Un-ha attended. The number of lawmakers participating in the alliance is about 20.

Lawmaker Kim stated, "President Yoon has used the power entrusted by the people only to cover up corruption involving himself, First Lady Kim Keon-hee, and his mother-in-law," adding, "It is appropriate for him to resign voluntarily, but since President Yoon has no such intention, the people must send a direct dismissal notice."

Floor leader Hwang criticized, "Those who are hardly worthy of being called president should be dismissed directly by the people, not impeached," and added, "It is even excessive to consider impeaching a president who has no intention of abiding by the constitution and laws during his term."

Lawmaker Moon explained, "We will gather the consensus of lawmakers to push for a constitutional amendment to shorten President Yoon's term by two years," adding, "This plan involves amending the supplementary provisions to shorten only President Yoon's term by two years. It does not use the existing impeachment system but can be considered a soft impeachment that achieves the effect of impeachment."

Floor leader Hwang emphasized the advantages of the constitutional amendment to shorten the term by two years, including no need for legal debates, development of the Candlelight Revolution, faster speed than impeachment, and the possibility of political compromise between ruling and opposition parties.
