Yeoncheon-gun, Gyeonggi Province, announced on the 1st that it has been finally selected for the high-precision electronic map construction project competition hosted by the National Geographic Information Institute of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.
Since 95% of Yeoncheon-gun's total area of 676㎢ is a military facility protection zone, and 37% of that, 237㎢, is a controlled protection zone, there have been many changes in terrain and landmarks due to its border area location. Among the 31 cities and counties in Gyeonggi Province, it is the only one without a 1:1000 scale topographic map, which caused difficulties in project implementation.
Through this project, Yeoncheon-gun plans to invest a total budget of 1 billion KRW, including 500 million KRW in national funds secured by winning the competition, to utilize the latest aerial photography and drone technology to accurately reflect the regional characteristics of the mountainous terrain. This will be used for land use planning, basic data for various development projects, GIS construction, and future urban development and infrastructure establishment.
When constructing the high-precision electronic map, it is expected to greatly contribute to preventing safety accidents among residents by linking with digital twins implemented as 3D models, allowing simulation of various risk situations such as urban planning, environmental protection, smart city construction, disaster response, and traffic accidents.
Lee Seung-yoon, Director of the Urban Division, stated, “By constructing a high-precision electronic map, we will create a smart city environment that practically benefits the residents,” and added, “We will continue to expand infrastructure and contribute to regional development.”
