The Presidential Committee on Carbon Neutrality and Green Growth 2050 announced that former Minister of Environment Han Hwajin has been appointed as the new private sector chairperson.
The new chairperson's term will be two years, from November 4, 2024, to November 3, 2026. Chairperson Han graduated from the Department of Chemistry at Korea University, earned a master's degree in physical chemistry from the same university's graduate school, and obtained a Ph.D. in chemistry from UCLA in the United States. She served as the Environmental Secretary from 2009 to 2010 during the Lee Myung-bak administration, and later held positions as Vice President of the Korea Environment Institute and member of the Green Growth Committee at the Office for Government Policy Coordination. After the inauguration of the Yoon Seok-yeol administration, she served as Minister of Environment from May 2022 until last July.
The Carbon Neutrality and Green Growth Committee explained, "New Chairperson Han Hwajin is expected to lead major national policies related to carbon neutrality and green growth, such as the establishment of the '2035 National Greenhouse Gas Reduction Target (NDC),' without any setbacks, based on her expertise in climate and environmental fields and extensive administrative experience."
Chairperson Han Hwajin stated, "The recent climate crisis has emerged as a key agenda that can determine not only individual lives but also national competitiveness," adding, "As the control tower for carbon neutrality and green growth, the committee will do its utmost to respond to the climate crisis based on science and technology."
