Over 50 Experts from Industry, Academia, and Research Participate to Explore Technology Cooperation
UNIST Presents Roadmap for the 'Dream Secondary Battery Industrial Ecosystem'
Ulsan Ulju Small Giant Special Zone (UNIST) held the ‘Secondary Battery Recycling Tech Forum’ on the 1st at the Industry-Academia Cooperation Building of Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology.
At the forum, more than 50 participants from Ulsan local companies such as Korea Zinc, SIS, Easy Mining, as well as representatives from Ulsan City, UNIST, Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology, and Korea Institute of Energy Research gathered in one place.
The attendees introduced innovative technologies for secondary battery recycling and discussed development plans.
During the forum, UNIST and Small Giant Special Zone companies shared promising next-generation battery recycling technologies jointly developed, and various panel discussions were held. Participants exchanged the latest technologies and research cases and discussed cooperation plans for sustainable development.
In his keynote speech, Kim Young-sik, Director of UNIST Industry-Academia Cooperation Group, presented the roadmap for Ulsan’s secondary battery life cycle demonstration project, emphasizing, “The existing secondary battery life cycle includes the cycle from raw materials to EVs, but now it must be expanded to include post-use battery reuse and recycled material cycles.” He added, “If this change is realized, Ulsan will be able to establish the world’s first dream secondary battery industry ecosystem that does not rely on specific minerals.”
UNIST reiterated the necessity of eco-friendly and cost-competitive recycling technologies at the forum. To this end, they explained that they are conducting technology development in cooperation with Small Giant Special Zone companies through projects from the Ministry of Environment and are also promoting commercialization plans with Korea Zinc.
This forum served as an opportunity to announce that Ulsan is a leading region in the battery recycling industry. In particular, it highlighted that Ulsan can leap forward as a global battery recycling hub with its industrial infrastructure and technological capabilities.
Park Jong-rae, President of UNIST, said, “UNIST has world-class research achievements in the field of secondary battery recycling,” and added, “We hope that research and industry sites will collaborate to lead innovative changes.”
Jung Hee-kwon, Chairman of the Research and Development Special Zone Promotion Foundation, stated, “Practical measures for the development of Ulsan’s secondary battery industry were presented at the forum,” and said, “The Special Zone Foundation plans to focus more on technology commercialization, startups, and R&BD support through the Ulsan Ulju Small Giant Special Zone innovation platform in the future.”
