On that day, the Cultural Heritage Administration conducted interviews with the holders and preservation members, held a public demonstration to understand the form and structure, and carried out additional interviews. The ‘Yangsan Gayajin Yongsinje’ submitted an application for designation as a national intangible cultural heritage in September 2023 and was selected as a target for designation investigation in January 2024, leading to this on-site investigation to evaluate its designation value.

In preparation for the Cultural Heritage Administration’s on-site investigation, Yangsan City verified the rituals and the Jeonhyangchuk of the ‘Yangsan Gayajin Yongsinje’ and, with advice from related experts to restore the dignity and status of the national rites, produced ritual costumes from the Yeong and Jeongjo eras.

Additionally, the city scientifically and technologically analyzed and reproduced early Joseon period Buncheong ceramics excavated from the Gayajin Temple area during the Four Major Rivers Project in 2008, showcasing them for the first time at this public demonstration event. In particular, Yangsan City allocated preservation support funds to enhance the skills related to the ‘Yangsan Gayajin Yongsinje’ and to motivate transmission activities.

Before the public demonstration event attended by over 300 people, Mayor Na Dong-yeon explained the national intangible cultural heritage value of the ‘Yangsan Gayajin Yongsinje’ to the Cultural Heritage Administration’s on-site investigation committee.

Mayor Na emphasized, “The Gayajin Yongsinje is a national rite and a cultural heritage with dignity and prestige,” and stressed the necessity of elevating the ‘Yangsan Gayajin Yongsinje’ to national intangible cultural heritage status, stating, “Proper compensation befitting its dignity and respect is the designation as a national intangible cultural heritage.”

The decision on whether to elevate the ‘Yangsan Gayajin Yongsinje’ to national intangible cultural heritage status is expected to be made in the first half of 2025 based on the investigation committee’s evaluation of its designation value.

Yangsan City stated that upon elevation of the ‘Yangsan Gayajin Yongsinje’ to national intangible cultural heritage, it will revise ordinances to allocate transmission education expenses for holders and inheritors and will do its utmost to provide administrative and financial support to ensure the intangible heritage is continuously transmitted.
