Seoul Gangdong-gu (District Mayor Lee Su-hee) announced on the 1st that the Gangdong Eoullim Welfare Center, a district-run welfare center for local people with disabilities and residents, will open on the 7th and begin providing welfare services.

The Gangdong Eoullim Welfare Center is the first district-run comprehensive welfare center for people with disabilities in Gangdong-gu, with a total floor area of 4,442.41㎡ spanning from three basement levels to six above-ground floors. Inside the welfare center, there are facilities such as a rehabilitation exercise room, aquatic rehabilitation exercise room, counseling rooms, a cafeteria, and program rooms.

The welfare center is located in the Cheonho and Amsa areas, where 37.4% of the registered disabled population (about 18,000 people) in Gangdong-gu reside, and is expected to serve as a space where local people with disabilities can freely engage in activities and communicate.

The district selected the Korea Disabled Persons Association as the entrusted organization in April this year and formed a special task force (TF) dedicated to the welfare center to prepare for smooth facility operation and the provision of welfare services.

The welfare center will provide welfare services such as counseling for people with disabilities, developmental support according to life cycles, rehabilitation exercises, and support for families of people with disabilities. It will also operate cultural and leisure programs available to local residents, facility rentals, and an art gallery.

District Mayor Lee Su-hee said, “The district-run Gangdong Eoullim Welfare Center will play an important role in enabling people with disabilities to lead independent lives and communicate with the local community, thereby improving awareness of disabilities and creating an inclusive community. We will continue to provide generous support to protect the rights of people with disabilities and create a discrimination-free environment.”
