Assemblywoman Gominjung Criticizes "Seoul City and Gwangjin-gu for Ignoring Residents' Voices and Poor Communication"
Residents' Emergency Committee Submits 11,612 Opposition Signatures to District Office
Gominjeong, Democratic Party member of the National Assembly for Gwangjin-eul, is announcing the official position at the 'Opposition Rally to the Temporary Terminal Project at Guui Park' in front of Gwangjin District Office on the 30th.
The modernization project of Dongseoul Terminal, a complex facility with 40 floors above ground, has hit a snag. Seoul City and Gwangjin-gu are promoting a plan to use the nearby Guui Park as a temporary terminal in connection with the Dongseoul Terminal modernization project in Guui-dong, but conflicts are escalating as proper consultations with residents near the park have not been conducted.
The Dongseoul Terminal modernization project involves the complex development of the terminal located at 546-1 Guui-dong (36,704㎡) into a transportation, sales, and office facility with 7 underground floors and 40 floors above ground. The private developer Shinsegae Property is leading the project, with a total project cost of 1.879 trillion KRW (excluding land costs).
Seoul City and Shinsegae plan to construct a three-floor underground terminal using the Guui Park site for temporary use, but residents near the park are opposing it, saying they cannot allow the destruction of the park.
On the 30th, Go Min-jung, the local district member of the National Assembly, issued an official statement criticizing the poor communication of Seoul City and Gwangjin-gu, escalating the conflict. Regarding this project, Representative Go said, “The most important factor in promoting regional development projects is residents’ acceptance and consent,” adding, “However, the main entities promoting the project, Seoul City and Gwangjin-gu, are ignoring residents’ voices and consistently practicing poor communication.”
Representative Go stated, “The plan to use the underground of Guui Park as a temporary terminal was made without any prior discussion with nearby residents, which is why they are opposing it,” emphasizing that “finding alternatives and obtaining residents’ consent are of utmost importance.” She also highlighted residents’ concerns about children’s commuting and safety during the construction period. Her office delivered this statement to Gwangjin-gu Office on the same day.
Residents opposing the destruction of Guui Park also criticized the administration for “repeatedly lying” and poor communication. Earlier, on the 22nd of last month, the Guui Park Guardians Emergency Committee submitted a statement opposing the temporary terminal at Guui Park to the district office, signed by 11,612 people, and is awaiting a response.
A representative of the residents opposing the project pointed out, “The district office promised to respond within a week but has not even kept that promise.” Voices are emerging in the area proposing the establishment of a negotiation table for discussions between the project stakeholders?Seoul City, Gwangjin-gu, Shinsegae Property?and the residents’ representatives.
