Suncheon-si to Host 'Imcheongdae Academic Conference' on November 1

'Reevaluation of the Historical, Academic, and Artistic Value of Imcheongdae Following Its Promotion to Treasure Status'

Suncheon City, Jeollanam-do (Mayor Noh Gwan-gyu) announced on the 31st that it will hold an academic conference titled "Academic Conference for the Promotion of Suncheon Imcheongdae to Treasure Status" at 3 p.m. on November 1st at the Suncheon Youth Center.


Imcheongdae is a monument erected in 1565 by Lee Jeong, the magistrate of Suncheon, to commemorate Kim Gong-pil and Jo Wi, who were exiled in Suncheon at the time. It was designated as a Tangible Cultural Property of Jeollanam-do in 1980. Unlike existing Joseon Dynasty monuments, it features refined external characteristics and excellent carving techniques, earning it high artistic value.

The city planned the academic conference to comprehensively review the historical, academic, and artistic significance of Imcheongdae and to seek its promotion to treasure status.


The first presentation, titled "The Historical and Academic Value of Suncheon Imcheongdae," will be delivered by Professor Lee Wook of the Department of History at Suncheon University, with discussion led by Choi Yeon-sook, Senior Research Fellow at the Korea Institute of Korean Studies.


The second presentation, titled "The Meaning and Artistic Value of the Inscription on Suncheon Imcheongdae," will be presented by Research Professor Jeong Hyun-sook of the Calligraphy Culture Research Institute at Wonkwang University, with discussion conducted by Senior Researcher Jo Mi-young of the Hwaeomsa Temple Cultural Heritage Museum.


The third presentation, titled "Directions for Regional Promotion and Utilization of Imcheongdae as a Treasure Based on Case Studies," will be given by Lee Soo-kyung, Director of the Regional Heritage Research Institute, with discussion by Sung Dae-cheol, Director of the Architectural Cultural Heritage Research Institute at the Jeonnam Cultural Heritage Research Institute.


Following the presentations and discussions, a comprehensive discussion will be chaired by Kim Hee-tae, former Cultural Heritage Specialist of Jeonnam Province. This academic conference is open to any Suncheon citizens interested in Suncheon Imcheongdae.


A city official stated, "We hope that through this academic conference, the historical, academic, and artistic values of Suncheon Imcheongdae will be reexamined and lead to its promotion to treasure status."
