Uijeongbu City, Gyeonggi Province (Mayor Kim Dong-geun) announced on the 30th that it held an event on the 29th to encourage the workplace sports team speed skating athletes who were selected as the national representatives for the 2024/25 season.
The encouragement event held in the mayor’s office was attended by Jegal Seong-ryeol, the director of the city’s speed skating team, and national representatives Kim Min-seon, Jeong Jae-won, and Yang Ho-jun. The atmosphere was warm and friendly as they exchanged congratulations and encouragement for the national team selection and expressed gratitude for the city’s support.
The athletes were selected as national representatives at the 59th National Men’s and Women’s Speed Skating Championships, which also served as the 2024/25 national team selection competition, held from the 22nd to the 24th at the Taereung International Skating Rink.
Kim Min-seon, a speed skating representative from Uijeongbu City, took first place in both the 500m and 1,000m events, earning selection as the national representative for these two distances. Olympic medalist Jeong Jae-won achieved second place in the 5,000m and third place in the 1,500m, securing his spot as the national representative for the 1,500m and 5,000m events. Additionally, Yang Ho-jun, the youngest member of the Uijeongbu speed skating team, placed second in the 1,500m and was selected as the national representative for that distance.
The athletes selected as national representatives this time are scheduled to participate in the International Skating Union (ISU) Speed Skating World Cup and the 2025 Harbin Asian Games.
Mayor Kim Dong-geun said, “I hope they will continue to shine and elevate the city’s status with outstanding achievements this season,” and added, “We will continue to provide support and encouragement so that the athletes can focus on their training and achieve good results.”
