Korea Minting and Security Printing Corporation Releases Card-Type Gold of the 'Cheonsang Yeolcha Bunyajido' Map

Korea Minting, Security Printing & ID Card Operating Corporation (KOMSCO) announced on the 30th that it has released two types of card-shaped gold products featuring the stepwise matte new technology applied to the ‘Cheonsang Yeolcha Bunya Jido’.

This product is part of the Royal Series that embodies the culture of the Joseon royal family. Starting with the Gyeongbokgung Palace commemorative medal (1st edition) in 2020, KOMSCO has released Haehak Bando-do (2nd edition), Cheonsang Yeolcha Bunya Jido (3rd edition), and Ilwol Obongdo (4th edition). Previously, in 2022, the Cheonsang Yeolcha Bunya Jido commemorative medal was released.

The newly released card-shaped gold features six stars on the front. It is characterized by depicting the Magal-gung area among the 12 zodiac signs of the ecliptic, centered on the Dusu (one of the 28 lunar mansions), which resembles the Big Dipper shape.

Additionally, the stepwise matte new technology applied differentiates brightness by area, reflecting the segmented regions of the Cheonsang Yeolcha Bunya Jido, which is noteworthy.

The back side features a star-shaped latent image, with a four-sided latent image (30mm) or two-sided latent image (17mm) that changes from ‘STAR’ to ‘999’ depending on the viewing angle. The back also bears the inscription ‘KOREAN ART & CULTURE CREATED BY KOMSCO’ along with KOMSCO’s hallmark.

The Cheonsang Yeolcha Bunya Jido card-shaped gold is released in two types: ▲30mm gold medal (purity 99.9%, weight 15.55g, proof) ▲17mm gold medal (purity 99.9%, weight 3.75g, proof).

Purchases are available from the 30th at KOMSCO’s online mall, Poongsan Hwadongyanghaeng, Hmall, The Hyundai.com, Lotte Department Store Mall, Naver Smart Store, SSG.com, and other outlets.

Sung Chang-hoon, President of KOMSCO, said, “The Cheonsang Yeolcha Bunya Jido card-shaped gold is a special product that embodies the stepwise matte new technology and the value of traditional culture. KOMSCO will continue to develop products so that the public can feel closer to Korea’s traditional culture and history.”

Meanwhile, the Cheonsang Yeolcha Bunya Jido stone engraving (天象列次分野之圖刻石), which inspired the commemorative medal and card-shaped gold products, is an astronomical map engraved on a rectangular stone, known for its high precision.

Most notably, it marks the celestial equator?a virtual line created by extending the Earth’s equatorial plane?and the ecliptic, the sun’s orbit centered on the North Pole, encompassing all observable stars, showcasing the excellence of Korean astronomy. It was designated as a national treasure in 1985.
