Secured 37.4 Billion KRW in National Road Funds... Sewerage Maintenance Project Worth a Total of 46.8 Billion KRW to be Promoted by 2029
Paju City will receive 37.4 billion KRW in national and local government funding following its designation as a priority management area by the Ministry of Environment. On the 30th, Yadang-dong (Unjeong 4-dong), a habitual flood damage area within Paju City, Gyeonggi Province (Mayor Kim Kyung-il), was officially designated as a priority management area for sewer maintenance by the Ministry of Environment. Accordingly, the maintenance projects promoted by Paju City to prevent flooding are expected to gain momentum.
According to the Ministry of Environment's announcement on the 29th, out of 30 areas applied by 21 local governments this year, only 16 areas including Yadang-dong in Paju City were designated as priority management areas. Following this designation, Paju City will receive 37.4 billion KRW in national and local government funds.
Paju City has made every effort to provide evidence persuading the seriousness of flood damage in the area and the urgent need for maintenance. They examined the correlation between heavy rainfall and flood damage, secured detailed data on damage status, and focused on preparing highly perceptible measures by listening to local residents' opinions. The Ministry of Environment's decision to designate Yadang-dong in Paju City as a priority management area is a result of highly evaluating Paju City's efforts.
Including the 37.4 billion KRW in national and local government funds from the Ministry of Environment's designation, Paju City plans to invest a total of 46.8 billion KRW to upgrade and newly install 10.4 km of stormwater pipes and install 1,385 rainwater inlets in the Yadang-dong area. After completing the sewer maintenance plan by March 2025, detailed design will begin in 2026, with the project scheduled for completion by 2029.
Mayor Kim Kyung-il of Paju City stated, “Due to climate change, heavy rainfall is occurring frequently, and the increase of impermeable layers caused by rapid urban development is increasing flood risks. Taking the designation of Yadang-dong as a priority sewer management area as an opportunity, we will do our best to establish comprehensive and systematic sewer infrastructure to protect citizens' lives and safety and improve their quality of life.”
