Professors Ija-il and Jo Yoon-kyung Selected... Ministry of Science and ICT Chooses 15 Centers, Providing 24.5 Billion KRW Support
Collaboration with Germany, Japan, etc., Developing Next-Generation Cancer Therapy and Customized Muscle Injury Treatment Technologies
UNIST biotechnology researchers are advancing global collaborative research with world-class research institutions.
Professor Ja-il Lee from the Department of Life Sciences and Professor Yoon-kyung Cho from the Department of Biomedical Engineering at UNIST (President Jong-rae Park) have been finally selected for the Ministry of Science and ICT’s “Advanced Bio Global Joint Research Center Establishment Project.”
With this project selection, the two professors will each receive a total of approximately 2 billion KRW over three years to conduct joint research with European and Asian research institutions in promising bio-technology fields.
▲ Professor Ja-il Lee’s team will develop “synthetic lethality” anticancer technology in collaboration with the Institute of Molecular Biology (IMB) in Germany and the AI-based new drug design company Aimble. Synthetic lethality is a phenomenon where cell death does not occur due to an abnormality in a single gene, but when mutations occur simultaneously in two or more genes, the cell dies. The joint research team plans to identify gene pairs that induce synthetic lethality by combining existing gene mutations in cancer cells through CRISPR gene-editing screening and develop drugs that can inhibit these genes.
▲ Professor Yoon-kyung Cho’s team is promoting the development of a multiscale composite system that provides optimized therapeutic solutions for different muscle injury sites. This research includes multiscale high-precision imaging scanning, development of artificial muscles based on functional vascular regeneration, localized drug delivery technology, and smart electrode patch development, with the ultimate goal of developing customized regenerative therapy technology based on artificial muscles. The University of Tokyo in Japan and the National University of Singapore will collaborate to strengthen international research capabilities.
The Global Advanced Bio Research Center Establishment Project is a program that implements agreements on R&D cooperation in the advanced bio field between countries and supports the establishment of sustainable cooperation bases with excellent overseas research institutions in the advanced bio sector. The Ministry of Science and ICT selected a total of 15 centers and announced the results on the 24th, providing a total of 24.5 billion KRW in funding from this year through 2026.
