LG Chem Supplies Thermal Adhesives to North American Battery Manufacturers

Vice Chairman Shin Hak-cheol "Actively Fostering Mobility Business"

LG Chem is making a full-scale entry into the battery thermal adhesive business in the North American market. Starting with this, the company plans to expand its automotive adhesive market and develop it into a business worth hundreds of billions of won.

On the 30th, LG Chem announced that it will supply battery thermal adhesives to manufacturers producing batteries in North America. Previously, LG Chem officially started its automotive adhesive business by acquiring the U.S.-based adhesive specialist company 'Unisil' in 2018. Unisil is the number one company in automotive body adhesives in North America. Since the acquisition, LG Chem has continuously supplied automotive body adhesives, but this is the first time it has supplied battery adhesives.

Thermal adhesives are used to bond battery cells to modules and packs, featuring high thermal conductivity and electrical insulation, making them essential for thermal management and performance maintenance. LG Chem currently holds more than 180 patents related to thermal adhesives and has recently developed products that contribute to cost reduction and weight reduction for customers, in addition to thermal performance.

In addition to battery thermal adhesives, LG Chem plans to expand its business into other electronic components such as camera sensors, headlamps, and vehicle displays.

Vice Chairman Shin Hak-cheol said, "Based on our technological capabilities accumulated in electronic materials fields such as displays and semiconductors?including material synthesis, physical property design, and manufacturing processes?we will actively nurture the mobility materials business, a future growth area, to strengthen our market position."
