Guri City Council Successfully Concludes '2024 Local Autonomy and Balanced Development Day Commemoration Event' Guri City Council held a commemorative ceremony on the 29th to mark the 'Local Autonomy and Balanced Development Day' and is taking a commemorative photo.

The Guri City Council in Gyeonggi Province (Chairman Shin Dong-hwa) successfully concluded various side events along with a commemorative ceremony on the 29th in celebration of the ‘Local Autonomy and Balanced Development Day.’

‘Local Autonomy and Balanced Development Day’ was established to commemorate the 9th constitutional amendment on October 29, 1987, which restored the direct presidential election system and local autonomy following the June Democratic Uprising earlier that year.

Last year, the Guri City Council was the first basic council to hold an event commemorating this day, and this year, the council co-hosted the ceremony with Guri City and co-organized it with the Guri City Residents’ Autonomy Council to enhance the meaning and value of local autonomy.

At the ceremony, about 100 people attended, including Baek Kyung-hyun, Mayor of Guri, Kim Seok-jung, Chairman of the Guri City Residents’ Autonomy Council, residents’ autonomy committee members, Kim Yong-ho, Chairman of the Legislative Alumni Association, and former Guri City Council members. Thirty-eight individuals who contributed to the development of local autonomy, including local residents, were awarded commendations from the Guri City Council Chairman, the Mayor of Guri, and the Guri City National Assembly member.

In addition to the commemorative ceremony, the event featured an exhibition and screening of award-winning works from the photo and video contest titled ‘This is Not Right?, This is Excellent^^’ held by the Guri City Council. Various side events, such as talent donation performances by the Ace Saxophone Club and residents’ autonomy committees from each district, were also held to increase citizen participation and response.

In his congratulatory speech, Shin Dong-hwa, Chairman of the Guri City Council, said, “As a result of the passionate June Uprising in 1987, true grassroots democracy began in South Korea with the realization of the direct presidential election system and local autonomy through the power of the citizens. We consider it meaningful that the three pillars of local autonomy and residents’ autonomy?the city council, the executive branch, and the residents’ autonomy council?jointly hosted and organized this commemorative event. Moving forward, we will carry out legislative activities focused solely on the citizens so that democracy and local autonomy can grow and develop further.”

In his congratulatory remarks, Baek Kyung-hyun, Mayor of Guri, said, “I thank the citizens who have worked hard for the development of local autonomy, and going forward, Guri City will continue to communicate with its citizens to create a city that develops while enhancing the value of local autonomy.”
