Emphasizing a Society Where Daily Life and Safety Coexist on the 2nd Anniversary of the 'Itaewon Tragedy'

Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon promised on the 29th, the 2nd anniversary of the '10·29 Itaewon Disaster,' to create a safer Seoul together with its citizens.

On the same day, Mayor Oh wrote on Facebook under the title "A Society Where Daily Life and Safety Coexist," stating, "A society where citizens' daily lives and safety coexist is the image of Seoul we must build."

In particular, Mayor Oh referred to the situation last weekend during Halloween when more than 100,000 people gathered in bustling areas such as Hongdae, Itaewon, Gangnam, and Seongsu, saying, "Since it was the largest scale gathering since the Itaewon disaster two years ago, there were concerns about safety accidents, but fortunately, thanks to the citizens' voluntary efforts to maintain order, it passed without any major incidents."

He then cited the early closure of a luxury brand event held in Seongsu-dong, Seongdong-gu as an example of change. Mayor Oh explained, "When a dangerous situation due to crowd concentration was detected at a brand event venue in Seongsu-dong, citizens actively reported it to 112, and the organizers communicated with related agencies to end the event early. Now, when a gathering of a certain scale or more is expected, even if it is not publicly hosted, the city and related agencies are required to establish a safety management plan."

He added that on the evening of the 26th, the outer wall of Seoul City Hall was illuminated in purple lights to honor the 159 victims, saying, "Together with the citizens, we will make Seoul safer. That will be the most sincere way we can remember."

Earlier, Mayor Oh also attended the 2nd anniversary citizen memorial ceremony held at Seoul Plaza in Jung-gu on the 26th. For the memorial ceremony, Seoul City Hall building lights were turned purple, symbolizing the 10·29 Itaewon Disaster. Additionally, support was provided including ▲ extended opening of the city hall main entrance and restrooms ▲ display of memorial messages on the lobby media wall ▲ deployment of safety and order personnel.
