Nam-gu District in Gwangju City will present a special reading promotion program focused on environment and ecology in November at the Hyochon Eoullim Library to enhance the reading culture among local residents.

Nam-gu announced on the 28th that the public Hyochon Eoullim Library will hold the ‘Library·People·Book’ program twice on November 2 and 9. This program was selected through a reading promotion project contest conducted by the Gwangju Municipal Library this year. The two programs target lower-grade elementary school students, youth, and adults in the district.

The Hyochon Eoullim Library will invite two professional writers to share engaging stories about environment and ecology with local residents.

First, on November 2, writer So-yeon Lee will give a lecture titled “I Decided Not to Buy Clothes.” Lee, who is also an activist with a marine environmental organization, will focus on clothing habits aimed at addressing the climate crisis and achieving zero waste for 30 youth and adults in the district. The lecture will cover how to wear clothes as if they were new without buying new ones and what kinds of clothes to wear from an environmental protection perspective.

On November 9, picture book author Yoo-jin Han, a winner of a local daily newspaper’s New Year Literary Contest, will hold a lecture. Han will conduct a picture book puppet show with 30 elementary school students in grades 1 to 3 and have a communication session discussing stories about forests, trees, and animals.

A Nam-gu official said, “We have prepared special stories to expand local residents’ opportunities to experience reading culture and to provide high-quality programs,” adding, “It will be a valuable time to learn life’s values and wisdom while improving the quality of life.”
