Ministry of Science and ICT and Ministry of Health and Welfare Selected for 'Boston Korea Joint Research Support Project'
The research team led by Professor Jo Junghui at Dankook University has embarked on developing new drugs to overcome refractory and drug-resistant cancers.
Dankook University announced on the 28th that Professor Jo's research team has been selected for the "Boston-Korea Joint Research Support Project" by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Ministry of Health and Welfare.
The Ministry of Science and ICT and the Ministry of Health and Welfare have been promoting international joint research projects in advanced bio fields between Korea and the United States since this year, aiming to achieve world-class R&D results.
The "Global Consortium for Next-Generation Drug Development to Overcome Refractory and Drug-Resistant Cancers," to be led by Professor Jo, will receive 6.85 billion KRW in national and local government funding over four years.
The consortium plans to identify new technologies that can effectively suppress and overcome the development of resistance to first- and third-generation molecular targeted therapies in tumors with EGFR (epidermal growth factor receptor) mutations, which account for about 40% of lung cancers.
Professor Jo said, "This year marks the 20th anniversary since EGFR mutations in lung cancer were first reported," adding, "With national development support from the Boston Project, we aim to open a new horizon in the paradigm of cancer treatment and secure competitiveness in the global biohealth market."
