The Saemangeum Development Agency is taking the first step to transform the Saemangeum National Industrial Complex into a global food hub.
On the 28th, the Saemangeum Agency announced that it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with companies and organizations preparing to move into the 'Saemangeum Fisheries Food Export Processing Complex' within the Saemangeum National Industrial Complex. The investment amount to be attracted through this MOU is approximately 130 billion KRW. Eight companies are participating, including Pulmuone, three dried and seasoned seaweed businesses, one cold storage and refrigeration company, and four seafood processing companies.
The Saemangeum Fisheries Food Export Processing Complex, covering a total area of 133,000㎡, is planned to include fisheries food research and development (R&D) facilities and a cooperation support center. Additionally, smart fisheries processing complexes such as apartment-style factories for seafood processing and seafood processing companies will be established.
The Saemangeum Agency plans to directly process and distribute seafood through this leap toward becoming a global food hub. Until now, seafood from the Saemangeum region, due to outdated processing and distribution structures, has been sent to other regions with an annual value of about 100 billion KRW. The Saemangeum Agency and Gunsan City built the fisheries food export processing complex within the industrial complex to make Saemangeum a food hub.
With the investment from companies through this MOU, about 350 jobs will be created, revitalizing the local economy.
Kim Kyungan, head of the Saemangeum Agency, said, "We will spare no effort to provide full support so that Saemangeum becomes the center of the global food industry."
