The National Assembly's Science, Technology, Information and Broadcasting and Communications Committee has finalized the resolution to file charges against Woo Oh-hyun, chairman of SM Group.
Lee Jeong-heon, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, requested Woo to appear as a witness on the 7th and 24th of this month, holding him responsible for the "deterioration of UBC Ulsan Broadcasting," but Woo was absent on both occasions.
Lee stated, "Woo Oh-hyun was absent from the National Assembly on the 7th without a valid reason, deliberately evaded the execution of the accompaniment order, and violated the National Assembly Witness and Expert Testimony Act. Through this committee's charge, the National Assembly must strictly hold Woo accountable for his illegal acts, including the suspected private abuse of UBC Ulsan Broadcasting."
Choi Min-hee, chairperson of the committee, said, "Despite the summons, Woo Oh-hyun, the witness who has not appeared at the committee meetings and has deliberately avoided receiving the accompaniment order, will be charged following consultation among the committee secretaries."
The decision to file charges was reached through bipartisan agreement. Park Jeong-hoon, a member of the People Power Party, also said, "There is enough suspicion that the Broadcasting and Communications Commission is protecting this issue. It is necessary to scrutinize corporate issues through current affairs questioning. I fully agree with Lee's proposal to file charges."
The charge proposal against Chairman Woo was approved around 10:20 p.m. with 12 votes in favor and 2 abstentions among the committee members present.
