It was reported that Kim Sumi was found unconscious by her son at her home in Bangbae-dong, Seocho-gu, that morning. Her son immediately called 119, and Kim Sumi was transported to the emergency room of Seoul St. Mary's Hospital. Later, emergency room staff confirmed her death and reported it to the police. She was 75 years old.

Jung Myungho, director of Napalggot F&B and Kim Sumi’s son, told Yonhap News in an interview that "the police who investigated the cause of death informed us that the final cause was hyperglycemic shock," adding, "Her blood sugar level was over 500." Hyperglycemic shock is a condition where the glucose concentration in the blood rises sharply, leading to a decline in bodily functions. It is said that external factors such as stress can be causes.

Kim Sumi debuted as part of MBC’s 3rd public recruitment of talents in 1970 and is one of Korea’s representative actresses, having won awards such as the Grand Prize at the 1986 MBC Drama Awards and Best Supporting Actress at the 32nd Blue Dragon Film Awards. She became known to the public as a mother-specialized actress by playing various mother roles, starting with "Ilyong Eomni" in the TV drama "Jeonwon Ilgi." Later, she showed a cheerful side in the MBC sitcom "Hello, Franceska" as well as in various variety shows and films. Until recently, she appeared on variety programs such as KBS 2TV’s "Sumi’s Mountain Lodge" and tvN’s "Sumi’s Side Dishes," showing a friendly image. Additionally, Kim Sumi appeared on the tvN STORY variety show "The Chairman’s People," which aired from 2022 until September of this year.

With a desire to feed those around her heartily, she personally made food and gave it as gifts, leading to an increase in celebrities who called her "mother." As celebrities praised her as the "national mother," she ventured into the kimchi business to share her kimchi with more people and became highly active as a businesswoman.
