The Pocheon Cultural Tourism Foundation (CEO Lee Jung-hyo) announced on the 25th that it will hold the "Kim Kwang-woo Art Museum Opening Ceremony" at Pocheon Art Valley on the 31st.
This event was organized to honor the artistic journey of the world-renowned sculptor Kim Kwang-woo, a native of Pocheon who passed away in 2021, and to allow many people to widely enjoy culture and arts through his legacy. Approximately 150 people, including the family of sculptor Kim Kwang-woo and distinguished guests, are expected to attend the opening ceremony.
The opening ceremony will begin with a congratulatory performance by the cello trio "Retus Ensemble," followed by an opening address by the foundation's CEO, a welcome speech by Pocheon Mayor Baek Young-hyun, a congratulatory speech by Im Jong-hoon, chairman of the Pocheon City Council, a commemorative speech by the family, the unveiling ceremony of the Kim Kwang-woo Art Museum, and an exhibition viewing.
The Kim Kwang-woo Art Museum was created by remodeling the first floor (440㎡) of the Pocheon Art Valley Education Exhibition Center and some outdoor spaces. Official operations will begin on November 1. It is the only single-artist museum in Pocheon, exhibiting only the works of the late sculptor Kim Kwang-woo.
The exhibition features 38 sculptures created from 1974 to 2021 under the theme "Nature and Humans."
Indoors, 34 works made from materials such as wood, sand, animals, and metal are displayed. In particular, the main exhibition hall will attract attention with representative works such as Bohemian (2005), Back to Hometown (2006), and ready-made object artworks.
Outdoors, four works using bronze, silver pots, mixed materials, and more are exhibited under the theme "Nature and Humans." These works reflect Kim Kwang-woo’s artistic sublimation of the destructive impacts he witnessed of the Korean War and the development of modern technology on nature and humans.
Lee Jung-hyo, CEO of the Pocheon Cultural Tourism Foundation, said, "We are pleased to introduce the artistic world of Mr. Kim Kwang-woo, who loved Pocheon throughout his life and continued his creative activities, to many visitors through the Kim Kwang-woo Art Museum," adding, "We will continue to develop the Kim Kwang-woo Art Museum as a representative museum of Pocheon."
Meanwhile, the Kim Kwang-woo Art Museum is open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. (last admission at 5 p.m.). Admission is free.
