As waves of mourning continue following the sudden death of actress Kim Sumi, a shaman has sparked controversy by seemingly predicting it in a video.
On the 24th, a YouTube channel uploaded a video titled "Kim Sumi is in big trouble. I see the Grim Reaper. How will she live from now on?" The shaman running the channel appeared to have predicted her death a day earlier, briefly drawing attention. However, it was soon revealed that the title and thumbnail of an unrelated video had been altered to deceive viewers. One netizen explained, "Don't be fooled. The title was sensationally changed," adding, "In the video, it was said that she would have a series of good works next year." In fact, the video mainly contained positive content about Kim Sumi's upcoming hit works.
Once the true nature of the video was exposed, netizens criticized the shaman for exploiting the deceased's death for personal gain. They expressed reactions such as "Is it right to use a dead person for your own profit?", "They deserve divine punishment," and "It's nothing less than disrespecting the deceased," condemning the shaman's distorted ethics. As the controversy grew, the shaman made the video comments private.
Earlier, Kim Sumi was found unconscious at her home on the morning of the 25th and was transported to Seoul St. Mary's Hospital, where she passed away at the age of 75. She debuted in 1970 as part of MBC's 3rd public talent recruitment and rose to stardom playing the role of Il-yong's mother in the drama Jeonwon Ilgi. Since then, she actively participated in dramas and films such as Dr. Oh's People, Hello, Francesca, Barefoot Ki-bong, and the Glory of the Family series. She also ventured into the kimchi business based on her excellent cooking skills and recently appeared on the tvN variety show Chairman's People.
Kim Sumi's son, Jung Myungho, director at Napalggot F&B, stated, "My mother was under a lot of stress because of the musical Chinjeong Eomma (Mother's Home)," adding, "She had not received any payment since last year and was preparing for a lawsuit." It is known that Kim Sumi faced difficulties due to unpaid fees after the production company of Chinjeong Eomma became embroiled in plagiarism disputes.
