Actress Kim Soo-mi (real name Kim Young-ok) suddenly passed away, and a wave of mourning for the late actress is spreading mainly on social media (SNS).
Actress Yoon Hyun-sook posted on her Instagram, "Teacher, how can you leave like this? I was planning to go to Gangwon-do with you and Jeong-su, but my heart hurts so much," expressing her condolences. Yoon Hyun-sook is a senior-junior colleague in the broadcasting industry who formed a connection with Kim Soo-mi through the 2011 drama 'Aejeong Manmanse.' Former announcer Yoon Young-mi also shared anecdotes about the late actress and paid tribute. She recalled, "When I came home to help with the social gathering for her 70th birthday party, many famous Korean actors and singers were there," and added, "It showed how much she gave to others and how big her heart was." She continued, "Even at that age, she enjoyed reading poetry, writing, and dressing up in pretty clothes?a born woman," and added, "I believe she went to heaven carrying love."
Condolences were also expressed from the political sphere. Kim Dong-yeon, Governor of Gyeonggi Province, wrote, "A great star of the cultural and artistic world has fallen. The bright and warm image of 'Il-yong Eomma' actress Kim Soo-mi will remain forever in all our memories," and added, "She was the best actress and a warm person. I sincerely pray for the repose of her soul and offer my condolences to her family." Kim Doo-gyeom, Mayor of Ulsan City, who appointed Kim Soo-mi as Ulsan’s promotional ambassador last year, posted a brief message saying, "I sincerely pray for the repose of her soul," along with a photo taken together at that time. Yoo In-chon, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, also conveyed a separate message, saying, "She was an actress who left a deeper impression than anyone else," and added, "She was not flashy but approached like family with warmth and humor, which makes the sadness even greater. I thank Teacher Kim Soo-mi for showing various possibilities to junior actors and deeply mourn her."
Meanwhile, Kim Soo-mi, born in 1949, debuted as an MBC 3rd generation public talent in 1970 and rose to stardom by playing the role of Il-yong’s mother in the drama 'Jeonwon Ilgi.' Since then, she actively worked across dramas and films such as 'Dr. Oh’s Family,' 'Hello, Francesca,' 'Barefoot Ki-bong,' and the 'Glory of the Family' series. She also challenged the kimchi business based on her excellent cooking skills and recently appeared on tvN’s 'The People of the Chairman’s House.' On the morning of the 25th, she was found unconscious at her home and was transported to Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. She was 75 years old.
