Lee Dong-hwan, Mayor of Goyang, "We Must Maximize the Impact of Next Year's UCLG ASPAC Summit" On the 24th, Lee Dong-hwan, Mayor of Goyang Special City, visited Ilsandong-gu Office to hold an on-site executive meeting and urged thorough preparations to maximize the ripple effects of next year's United Cities and Local Governments Asia-Pacific Summit.

Lee Dong-hwan, Mayor of Goyang Special City, visited Ilsandong-gu Office on the 24th to hold a visiting executive meeting and urged thorough preparations to maximize the ripple effects of next year's World Organization of United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) Asia-Pacific (ASPAC) General Assembly.

Mayor Lee said, “On the 23rd, I attended the 2nd Executive Committee Meeting of the UCLG ASPAC held in Zhengzhou, Henan Province, China, where we discussed specific cooperation matters for next year's General Assembly and signed a memorandum of understanding. The 10th General Assembly next year, themed ‘The Future of Local Governments, Sustainable Global Self-sufficient Cities,’ will provide insights into ongoing projects in our city such as the Free Economic Zone, K-Culture Valley, Smart City, and the integrated stream maintenance of Changneungcheon,” he said.

Mayor Lee added, “The ASPAC General Assembly to be held next year will be the third time ever hosted in South Korea, a large-scale conference involving over 190 local governments and local government associations from 22 Asia-Pacific countries. Since long-term preparations such as infrastructure development and support plan establishment are necessary to successfully host this international event, I believe there is not much time left until September next year.”

The mayor emphasized, “While preparing for the meeting itself is important, it is also crucial to enhance Goyang City's urban brand image through visitors and closely link tourism and commercial districts to maximize economic ripple effects. During the event preparation process, not only the relevant departments but also various departments such as economy and tourism must cooperate organically to ensure this event drives the development of Goyang City.”

Mayor Lee stated, “Regarding the Daejang-Hongdae Metropolitan Railroad private investment project, which is the fastest progressing among the recent private railway projects promoted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the station location in our city has been finally confirmed to be within the Deogeun District instead of the originally planned Guryong Intersection. We expect this will greatly improve the convenience of railway transportation for citizens and reduce traffic congestion in the western metropolitan area by shortening commuting times.”

He added, “After the opening, efforts should be made to expand connecting transportation networks such as buses so that more citizens can use Deogeun Station. We will also actively strive to ensure that future citizen-demanded railway plans such as GTX-A and the Goyang-Eunpyeong Line proceed smoothly and promptly.”
