The city of Suwon in Gyeonggi Province is remaking the urban ecology status map based on a biodiversity survey.
On the 24th, Suwon City held the 'Suwon City Biodiversity Survey Service Kick-off Meeting' at the Suwon Youth Support Center and announced on the 25th that the project will be carried out through the Suwon City Policy Research Institute, Dongguk University Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation, and Softgraphy Co., Ltd. until December next year.
Biodiversity will be surveyed by taxonomic groups such as vegetation, plants, birds, mammals, amphibians, reptiles, and insects, and the urban ecology status map will be updated based on the survey results.
The main service contents include ▲ partial update of the Suwon City urban ecology status map and creation of thematic maps ▲ selection and survey of excellent biotopes (biological habitats) in Suwon City ▲ survey of specific organisms in Suwon City and establishment of response measures to issues ▲ support for citizen biodiversity monitoring.
Among the first-grade areas in the biotope evaluation results of the metropolitan urban ecology status map, biotopes with excellent ecological value will be selected and conservation plans will be proposed. In addition, surveys and analyses will be conducted on Suwon tree frogs, large-billed crows, freshwater cormorants, otters, and invasive plant species to establish response measures.
Furthermore, the achievements of monitoring data conducted by citizens and organizations will be analyzed, and guides and sharing systems for participants in biodiversity monitoring will be prepared.
An official from Suwon City stated, "Through the biodiversity survey service, we will investigate changes in urban biota due to urban development and land use changes, and build natural environment data unique to Suwon City," adding, "It will be used as basic data for urban environmental management."
