A woman reported to the police after her boyfriend, who fractured her spine, denied the charges and refused to take responsibility.

On the 24th, JTBC's 'Case Manager' reported the story of informant A, who claimed her spine was fractured by her boyfriend. Last July, A went on a trip to a beach in Geoje, Gyeongnam, with her boyfriend and a couple who were friends of her boyfriend. At the time, her boyfriend proposed a bet to his friend, saying, "Let's see who can throw their girlfriend better." Despite A firmly refusing and telling him not to do it, he ignored her and lifted her up, throwing her into the sea.

As a result of the accident, A suffered serious injuries with three fractured vertebrae and was given a 14-week recovery period. However, she told the 119 emergency responders that she had injured herself by falling alone to protect her boyfriend. When surgery required a guardian, she tried to contact her boyfriend but could not reach him, and eventually reported the incident to the police. During the police investigation, the boyfriend stated, "I did not throw A into the sea," and the friend couple who traveled with them also lied, saying they did not see the throwing.

Due to a lack of evidence aside from these statements, the police decided not to prosecute for insufficient evidence. However, following the prosecution's order for supplementary investigation, the case was reopened, and the boyfriend was eventually indicted on charges of assault causing injury. In court, he claimed, "A was heavily intoxicated and her memory is distorted," and insisted, "I never threw her into the sea. I don't remember because I was drunk."

The first trial court sentenced him to one year in prison and ordered his detention in court, citing that he could not explain the circumstances of A's injury and that the sea water depth was only up to an adult's knee. The court also noted, "Despite the victim sustaining severe injuries, he not only failed to show remorse but also cut off contact and made false statements," as reasons for the sentence. Both A and her boyfriend have appealed the first trial verdict.

A told 'Case Manager,' "I was seriously injured and cannot sit for long, so I cannot work, and I have to live with a disability that prevents me from running for the rest of my life." She added, "I have no intention of settling and will fight to the end to ensure my ex-boyfriend is punished for avoiding responsibility."

Netizens who read the story responded with comments such as, "One year in prison is too light, and he appealed? That's ridiculous," "The man is out of his mind," and "This is not a joke; it is close to attempted murder."
