Installation of Nokbeoncheon to Replace Removed Cover

On Dokdo Day... Eunpyeong-gu Plans to Install Large 'Dokdo Sculpture' Eunpyeong-gu announced on the 24th that it plans to install a new landmark, the 'Dokdo Sculpture,' at Nokbeoncheon, which is scheduled for covering construction. District Mayor Kim Mi-kyung is announcing the related details. Provided by Eunpyeong-gu.

Eunpyeong-gu, Seoul (Mayor Kim Mi-kyung) is set to become the first in the nation to install a large-scale Dokdo sculpture within a river to promote the value and importance of Dokdo.

Eunpyeong-gu will install a sculpture scaled down to 1/100th the actual size of Dokdo in Nokbeoncheon, near Eungam Station on Subway Line 6, which is scheduled for covering construction. The Dokdo sculpture will be approximately 10 meters long, 4.3 meters wide, and 1.4 meters high, with installation and unveiling planned for October 25, 2027, on Dokdo Day, three years from now.

The Dokdo sculpture is being installed to provide residents with opportunities to feel closer to and experience Dokdo in their daily lives. The district expects that Nokbeoncheon, where the sculpture will be completed, will become an educational space that informs about Dokdo’s history and beauty, as well as a new tourist attraction, thereby contributing to local economic revitalization.

Nokbeoncheon, the installation site of the Dokdo sculpture, is a tributary of Bulgwangcheon, stretching from the area around 41-8 Yeokchon-dong to the confluence with Bulgwangcheon, and is currently preparing for the removal of its covering. Eunpyeong-gu plans to reflect the installation of the Dokdo sculpture in the restoration plan for Nokbeoncheon after consultations with the Seoul Metropolitan Government.

This Dokdo sculpture installation project is a response to Japan’s attempts to dispute Dokdo, with Eunpyeong-gu continuously striving to remind that Dokdo is clearly Korean territory and to deeply embed Dokdo in the hearts of the people.

Meanwhile, until the sculpture is installed, the district announced that Dokdo videos will be continuously broadcast through the Media Bridge, a landmark of Bulgwangcheon.

Mayor Kim Mi-kyung said, “October 25 is Dokdo Day, and I hope the installation of the Dokdo sculpture will serve as an opportunity for residents to reflect on the value and importance of Dokdo,” adding, “I expect it to grow into a symbolic landmark of the region that fosters awareness of protecting Dokdo.”
