Gyeonggi-do Holds Meeting with City/County and Shared PM Companies
Review of Towing System...Discussion on Fundamental Solutions to Illegal Parking Issues
Gyeonggi Province held a meeting with city and county governments, shared PM companies, and related organizations on the 22nd to address the issue of illegal parking of personal mobility devices (PM) within the province. Gyeonggi Province announced on the 23rd that it held a meeting with city and county officials, shared PM companies, and related organizations on the 22nd to address the issue of illegal parking of personal mobility devices (PM) within the province.
Accidents related to personal mobility devices in Gyeonggi Province totaled 852 cases in 2023, with 953 casualties. Although this represents a slight decrease compared to 953 accidents and 1,082 casualties in 2022, the numbers remain high. This issue threatens the safety of residents and requires fundamental countermeasures.
The number of operating personal mobility devices was approximately 65,000 as of September 30, 2024, down from about 82,000 as of September 30, 2023. Since July 2021, Gyeonggi Province has operated an open chat room involving city and county officials, residents, and company representatives to encourage voluntary collection by companies upon resident reports. Reports received through this channel numbered 2,284 in 2023 (with a 99% processing rate) and 4,439 in 2024 (with a 98% processing rate), indicating ongoing inconvenience for residents. Gyeonggi Province continues to make efforts to resolve illegal parking complaints through this open chat room.
At this meeting, Gyeonggi Province and city and county officials agreed on the necessity of towing illegally parked personal mobility devices, while shared PM companies agreed to actively work on prompt voluntary collection and age verification to create a safer PM usage environment.
Yoon Tae-wan, Director of the Metropolitan Transportation Policy Division of Gyeonggi Province, stated, “This meeting marked a turning point in seeking concrete measures to solve the illegal parking problem of personal mobility devices. We will do our best to create an environment that considers not only the convenience of residents’ mobility but also their safety.”
