Parents held a condolence wreath protest after it was revealed that the child of a Bundang-gu city council member committed school violence, including forcing a classmate to eat sand.
On the morning of the 23rd, a condolence wreath protest by parents took place in front of an elementary school in Bundang-gu, Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province. About 100 condolence wreaths lined up along one side of the sidewalk bore messages such as "Child, Bundang moms will stand with you," "School violence perpetrators! Sincerely apologize and leave," and "Apologies until forgiveness is granted." The elementary school recently became embroiled in controversy due to a school violence incident among enrolled students. Furthermore, one of the perpetrators was revealed to be the child of a politician, causing a significant uproar.
Local residents created a group chat related to the incident to share opinions, and it was reported that more than 600 people participated in the protest. A representative of the protest organizers said the day before, "We plan to hold a condolence wreath protest to protect children from school violence," and urged, "Since students may be watching, please follow the guidelines by using warm words of encouragement and restrained phrases demanding responsible measures against the perpetrators."
According to the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education and Seongnam City Council, four sixth-grade students at an elementary school in Bundang-gu committed acts of violence against one student from April to June. The perpetrators reportedly forced the victim to eat a mixture of snacks and sand in a park and bullied them by pressing down on their body as a game penalty. After confirming these facts, the education authorities recently held a School Violence Countermeasure Committee meeting and ordered two of the perpetrators to submit written apologies and change classes. The other two, who were less involved, were each required to submit written apologies and perform four hours of school service or submit a written apology.
After it was revealed that one of the perpetrators was the child of Councilor A of Seongnam City Council, affiliated with the People Power Party, Councilor A posted an apology, stating, "As a parent, I bear great responsibility for not properly teaching my child." However, on the 20th, Ahn Cheol-soo, a People Power Party lawmaker, issued a dismissal order through the "People Power Party Bundang Gap Members' Council's Position on Seongnam School Violence," demanding, "Take responsibility and leave the party." Consequently, Councilor A submitted a resignation from the People Power Party Gyeonggi Provincial Party on the morning of the 21st. That afternoon, members of the Democratic Party in Seongnam City Council held a press conference urging Councilor A to voluntarily resign.
