High-Intensity Delinquent Tax Collection Implemented for Defaulters Owing Over 10 Million Won and Over One Year
Including Property Seizure and Prosecution Referral
Jung-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Kim Gil-seong) announced on the 23rd that, as part of its intensive delinquent tax collection efforts, it will disclose the list of high-amount and habitual defaulters of local taxes and non-tax revenues on the 20th of next month.
The disclosure targets those who have overdue amounts of 10 million KRW or more for over one year. For local tax defaulters, the first disclosure candidates were selected in April, and payment and explanation opportunities were provided until September. The final disclosure candidates will be decided at the Local Tax Deliberation Committee meeting on the 24th.
The disclosed items include the defaulter's name, business name (corporate name), age, occupation, address or place of business, and details of the overdue tax items and payment deadlines. For corporations, information about the representative will also be disclosed. The disclosed list can be checked through the Witax website and other channels.
The district has formed a special delinquent tax collection team to eradicate intentional local tax delinquency by searching the homes of high-amount and habitual defaulters and seizing movable property. Additionally, real estate and membership rights discovered during the collection process are auctioned through the Asset Management Corporation.
Furthermore, during the period for comprehensive seizure and organization of seized real estate, auctions are conducted on the real estate of defaulters who are deceased, missing, or residing overseas. Delinquency data is provided to the Korea Credit Information Services to impose restrictions on bank loans and credit card issuance. Moreover, travel bans and prosecution referrals are also implemented, making all-out efforts to eradicate delinquency.
As a result, as of the end of September, 1.558 billion KRW of district tax arrears have been collected, reaching 183% of the annual target of 850 million KRW. Additionally, 223 million KRW of arrears were collected through nationwide court deposit seizure and collection.
Also, for non-tax revenue defaulters, collection activities have been strengthened by investigating and seizing virtual assets and nationwide court deposits, collecting 3.593 billion KRW of arrears as of the end of September.
District Mayor Kim Gil-seong stated, "Through thorough investigation and on-site verification, we will strictly take action against high-amount, habitual, and malicious defaulters and realize tax justice where diligent taxpayers are favored."
