Stop 'Hakpok' with AI... S1 School Violence Solution Gains Growing Attention

S-1 Intelligent CCTV Monitors School Violence Signs and Blind Spots

Recently, there has been growing interest in artificial intelligence (AI) security solutions aimed at preventing school violence. This comes as social awareness increases while the problem of school violence becomes increasingly severe. There are also voices saying that existing systems are insufficient to stop school violence. As schools nationwide roll up their sleeves to introduce AI security solutions to address this issue, security company S-1’s ‘Intelligent School Safety Solution’ is gaining attention.

On the 23rd, S-1 announced that its intelligent CCTV provides customized services necessary for schools, with sales this year increasing by 158% compared to the previous year. S-1’s intelligent school safety solution features a real-time video analysis algorithm embedded in CCTV that offers an ‘automatic school violence detection’ function to ensure safe school life. This algorithm monitors school violence situations through AI video analysis, instantly recognizing signs and incidents of assault. It automatically notifies school administrators to enable proactive responses.

An S-1 representative explained, "The school violence algorithm learns various behavior patterns through deep learning technology, accurately distinguishing between normal school activities and violent situations. By applying a specialized algorithm, it immediately detects attempts to disable cameras by covering them with hands or objects, allowing it to detect school violence acts in any situation."

In particular, linking with integrated control centers can enhance practical prevention effects. According to data from the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education, among 604 elementary schools in Seoul, only about 20 have CCTV linked to control centers. Previously, even with CCTV, there was no preventive effect, and it was only used for post-incident measures. S-1 cited the installation of school-customized intelligent CCTV linked with an integrated control center at an elementary school located in Dobong-gu, Seoul, as an example. Considering that 70.9% of school violence incidents occur on school premises according to Ministry of Education surveys, intelligent security solutions that can quickly detect signs or early occurrences of school violence can enhance the effectiveness of prevention.

The reason for the increased interest in S-1’s school safety solution is the recent severity of the school violence problem. According to the Ministry of Education’s announcement last month, the number of school violence cases increased by 43.9%, from 42,706 in 2019 to 61,445 last year. The number of school violence cases severe enough to initiate disciplinary review also rose for the third consecutive year, reaching 23,579 last year compared to 8,357 in 2020. This year, the ‘School Violence Survey (full survey)’ results showed that 2.1% of elementary, middle, and high school students experienced school violence, marking the highest rate in 11 years.

Students responded that effective prevention activities include ‘education on school violence prevention and response methods’ (27.8%), followed by ‘installation of closed-circuit television (CCTV) in schools’ (20.9%). This indicates an urgent need for customized support to prevent school violence. An S-1 representative stated, "We will continue to develop AI solutions to prevent crimes and safety accidents within schools, contributing not only to the prevention of evolving school violence crimes but also to creating a safe educational environment."
