Missing After Being Swept Away by Waves While Posing for a Photo

A man went missing after being swept away by a massive wave while posing for a photo on Java Island, Indonesia.

According to foreign media including the Daily Mail, a male tourist named Roni Joshua Simanjuntak (21), who was taking photos at Kedung Tumpang Beach, went missing on the 13th (local time). He was from North Sumatra and was visiting with 15 friends that morning.

In the video capturing the incident, Roni is seen striking a pose with both hands raised next to coastal rocks for a photo. However, a huge wave suddenly crashed from behind, and Roni disappeared. Friends who were taking photos a short distance away were shocked and called his name, but Roni vanished into the waves and did not reappear. Rescue authorities are currently searching for the missing Roni.

Local police stated, "We know that young people and tourists like to visit this place to take photos," adding, "But we advise them not to go near the beach because it is very dangerous." The wave height at the time Roni was taking photos was estimated to be about 2 to 4 meters.

This is not the first case of danger while taking certification photos. Earlier last month, tourists taking wave photos at the Qiantang River in Haining City, Zhejiang Province, China, were swept away by a tsunami. A video released on the Chinese social networking service (SNS) Weibo showed waves crashing over tourists taking photos by the river. Some tourists were holding cameras even as they were swept away by the current, sparking controversy. The incident reportedly caused multiple injuries and missing persons, though the exact number of casualties is unknown.

Meanwhile, in July, Frenchman Remy Lucidi (30), who had taken certification photos atop skyscrapers worldwide, died after falling from the 68th floor of a high-rise building in Hong Kong. Local police suspect he climbed to the top of the building to enjoy extreme sports and fell to his death.
