First Product Based on Orion CPU
Qualcomm, a semiconductor company specializing in smartphone "brain" application processors (AP), unveiled its new "Snapdragon 8 Elite" mobile platform at the Snapdragon Summit held in Hawaii, USA, on the 21st (local time).
This new product features the "Orion" central processing unit (CPU) based on the "Nuvia" technology that Qualcomm acquired in 2021. This CPU, departing from the traditional ARM-based design, incorporates Qualcomm's latest technology focused on performance enhancement.
Qualcomm described it as "the fastest and most powerful system on chip (SoC) available for smartphones" and "a result of integrating the latest technologies."
The name "Elite" is a newly introduced brand by Qualcomm, signifying technological superiority leading the industry. Until the previous generation, the naming format was based on numbers such as "Snapdragon 8 3rd Gen."
The Snapdragon 8 Elite significantly improves performance through a 2nd generation custom CPU, enhanced graphics processing unit (GPU), and a neural processing unit (NPU) that maximizes artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities.
Based on this, various AI-powered applications can be run on smartphones.
In particular, it greatly enhances gaming performance and elevates user experience through ultra-fast internet browsing and AI-based camera functions.
Chris Patrick, Senior Vice President of Qualcomm's Mobile Handset Division, stated, "The Snapdragon 8 Elite is the first mobile chip to apply Qualcomm's latest CPU technology, achieving significant advancements in both performance and power efficiency."
He added, "Through AI technology, it can more precisely recognize users' voice, context, and images, providing excellent performance across various tasks while protecting privacy."
