Hyundai AutoEver Vehicle SW Recognized on International Stage... Korea's First Level 3

"Clearly Managing Processes at the Organizational Level"
Meeting European Complete Vehicle Delivery Standards

Hyundai AutoEver announced on the 22nd that its vehicle software (SW) platform ‘Mobilgene Classic 2.0’ has received Level 3 certification from the global evaluation system ‘Automotive SPICE’.

Automotive SPICE (Automotive-Software Process Improvement Capability dEtermination·A-SPICE) is an evaluation system created by global automakers, and this is the first time a Korean company has received Level 3 certification. The assessment is conducted by Kugler Maag, a German organization considered the largest certification body worldwide. This institution verifies the software development process of companies based on 130 criteria.

The certification is divided into six levels, from the lowest Level 0 to Level 5. Currently, to supply software-related products to European automakers, Level 2 compliance is required. According to the German Association of the Automotive Industry, Level 3 represents “a stage where processes are clearly managed at the organizational level,” which is among the highest standards at present. Hyundai AutoEver received Level 1 certification in 2021. After three years of research, development, and testing, it skipped Level 2 and directly obtained Level 3 certification.

The Mobilgene Classic platform certified this time is Hyundai Motor Group’s standard vehicle software platform. It is applied to mass-produced vehicles from Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis. A vehicle software platform is similar to a computer operating system (OS). It integrates and controls the vehicle’s internal communication system and functions. The company began developing its own vehicle software platform in 2012 and first applied version 1.0 to the Hyundai Grandeur IG in 2016. Since then, it has improved software functional safety and developed Mobilgene Classic 2.0.

The proportion of software in the vehicle development process has increased significantly compared to the past. Accordingly, software quality management has also become more important. Not only European automakers such as Daimler, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, and Porsche apply this certification, but American companies like General Motors (GM) and Ford have also adopted it, establishing it as an international standard.

Hyundai AutoEver’s Mobilgene Classic previously received the highest grade (ASIL-D) in the automotive safety integrity level for functional safety evaluation set by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). This grade is determined by assessing the severity of accidents, frequency of occurrence, and controllability. The D grade is the strictest level, managing faults that could lead to accidents to fewer than one occurrence during 100 million hours of continuous software use.

Jung Ji-hoon, head of Hyundai AutoEver’s Vehicle Electronics SW Center, said, “Based on global-level vehicle software technology, we will secure core competitiveness in the software-defined vehicle (SDV) era.”
