Six universities, including Korea University located in Seongbuk-gu, Seoul, have rolled up their sleeves together regarding the re-promotion of the Gangbuk Transversal Line, joining the district’s initiative for the ‘Rapid Re-promotion Signature Campaign for the Gangbuk Transversal Line.’
Seongbuk-gu (Mayor Lee Seung-ro) held a meeting with six universities within the district on the 21st and announced on the 22nd that the universities have united in their intention to rapidly re-promote the Gangbuk Transversal Line and have joined the signature campaign involving the entire community. The participating universities are Kookmin University, Korea University, Dongduk Women’s University, Seokyeong University, Sungshin Women’s University, and Hansung University.
At the meeting, presidents, vice presidents, and heads of departments from the six universities in Seongbuk-gu all strongly agreed on the necessity of the rapid re-promotion of the Gangbuk Transversal Line and resolved to actively participate in the signature campaign. Each university plans to conduct a large-scale signature campaign on campus involving students and faculty, as well as an online signature campaign using QR codes targeted at alumni associations.
The Gangbuk Transversal Line is a light rail line that runs from Cheongnyangni Station through Jeongneung, Gireum in Seongbuk-gu, Hongje in Seodaemun-gu, Digital Media City in Mapo-gu, and extends to Mokdong Station in Yangcheon-gu. It was highly anticipated as a route that would effectively alleviate the inconvenience of citizens having to rely solely on roads for travel between the northeastern and southwestern parts of Seoul, while promoting balanced regional development.
According to the plan, the Seongbuk-gu section is expected to have five stations: Jeongneung 3-dong Station (tentative name), Jeongneung Station, Gireum Station, Jongamsageori Station (tentative name), and Wolgok Station. It will connect with four lines including the Uisinseol Line, Line 4, Line 6, and the Dongbuk Line (scheduled to open in 2026), amplifying its ripple effect. Above all, several universities are concentrated along the route, making the rapid promotion of the Gangbuk Transversal Line urgent to provide convenience to approximately 100,000 commuting students and to revitalize the stagnant university districts.
Mayor Lee Seung-ro emphasized, “The Gangbuk Transversal Line is an effective measure to solve the poor transportation issues in Seongbuk-gu, where there is no direct railway network connecting east and west, and it will be a practical driving force leading the Gangbuk area’s grand transformation and the Gangbuk Renaissance era that Seoul City is ambitiously pursuing.” He added, “Especially since many universities are concentrated along the route in Seongbuk-gu, it is expected to greatly contribute not only to providing commuting convenience for students but also to the mutual growth of universities and the local community. We will continue to closely cooperate to convey the aspirations of local members to Seoul City and the government.”
