37 Candidates for Successor to Supreme Court Justice Kim Sang-hwan Revealed... Approval of High Court Chief Judges Koo Hoe-geun and Kim Si-cheol

The list of 37 candidates to succeed Supreme Court Justice Kim Sang-hwan, who will retire upon the expiration of his term on December 27, was released on the 21st.


On this day, the Supreme Court disclosed the names of 37 candidates who agreed to be reviewed by the Supreme Court Justice Candidate Recommendation Committee out of 78 candidates nominated from both inside and outside. All of them are former or current judges, with 35 current judges and 2 former judges. Among the 6 female nominees, 2 agreed to the review.

The candidates include Gu Hoe-geun, Chief Judge of the Seoul High Court (age 56, Judicial Research and Training Institute class 22), who dismissed the injunction request against the increase in medical school admissions, and Kim Si-cheol, Chief Judge of the Seoul High Court (age 59, class 19), who presided over the appellate trial of the divorce lawsuit between SK Group Chairman Choi Tae-won and Noh So-young, director of the Art Center Nabi.


Ma Yong-ju, Chief Judge of the Seoul High Court (age 55, class 23), and Hwang Jin-gu, Chief Judge of the Seoul High Court (age 53, class 24), both former senior judicial researchers at the Supreme Court, were also named. The senior judicial researcher assists in Supreme Court trials, including the full bench, and is often called the "gateway to becoming a Supreme Court Justice."


Among the candidates who are not current judges, former judge and lawyer Cho Han-chang (age 59, class 18) and Kim Pil-gon, standing commissioner of the Central Election Commission (age 61, class 16), agreed to the review.


The Supreme Court plans to collect opinions from inside and outside from the 22nd of this month until the 5th of next month. The list of candidates who agreed to the review among the nominees can be checked on the Republic of Korea Courts website's public service section, where information submitted by the candidates regarding their education, major career, assets, military service, and criminal records can also be viewed.


Based on the collected opinions, the Supreme Court Justice Candidate Recommendation Committee will recommend more than three times the number of candidates to be appointed. Chief Justice Cho Hee-dae will select three from among them and recommend them to President Yoon Seok-yeol.


The chairperson of the recommendation committee is Lee Kwang-hyung, president of the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). Ex officio members include Senior Justice Kim Sang-hwan, Cheon Dae-yeop, head of the Court Administration Office, Park Seong-jae, Minister of Justice, Kim Young-hoon, president of the Korean Bar Association, Cho Hong-sik, president of the Korean Law Professors Association, and Hong Dae-sik, chairman of the Council of Law Schools.


Among the non-ex officio external members are President Lee and Kim Gyun-mi, invited professor of the Department of Communication and Media at Ewha Womans University, and Jung Soon-seop, professor at Seoul National University Law School. Judge Lee Hee-jun of the Seoul High Court was appointed as the judicial member.
