Chef Jeong Ji-seon from the Netflix variety show 'Heukbaek Yori-sa: Yori Gyegup Jeonjaeng' (hereafter 'Heukbaek Yori-sa'), which ended amid great popularity, confessed to being a victim of dine-and-dash.
On the 20th, Chef Jeong Ji-seon, a Chinese cuisine expert who appeared as part of the Baeksojeo (White Spoon) team on 'Heukbaek Yori-sa,' appeared on KBS 2TV's variety show 'Sajangnim Gwiyeun Dangnagwi Gwi.' On the show, when MC Jeon Hyun-moo said, "I heard you’ve been upset lately," Chef Jeong replied, "Yesterday, a dine-and-dash incident happened at my restaurant." Known as the "Dim Sum Queen," she currently operates the Chinese restaurants 'Tien Mimi' in Gangnam and Hongdae, Seoul.
She explained, "Two mixed-gender customers ordered a set menu plus ? la carte items, but after eating, they ran away without paying," adding, "The damage amounted to 150,000 won." Upon hearing Chef Jeong’s story, North Korean defector and restaurateur Lee Soon-sil became furious, saying, "If I catch them, I’ll break their legs with a stick and bring them to me." When Jeon Hyun-moo asked, "What happens if someone dines and dashes in North Korea?" Lee Soon-sil answered, "They get executed by firing squad."
Meanwhile, 'Heukbaek Yori-sa' is a variety show depicting a culinary class war among 100 chefs, where the hidden masters known as 'Heuksujeo' (Black Spoon), who are highly praised for their taste, challenge South Korea’s top star chefs called 'Baeksujeo' (White Spoon). The show ranked number one in the non-English TV series category in South Korea on Netflix upon release and made the top 10 in countries like Taiwan and Singapore, drawing significant attention.
Michelin 3-star Chef Ahn Sung-jae, who appeared as a judge on 'Heukbaek Yori-sa,' recently mentioned Chef Jeong on JTBC's 'Newsroom.' When asked, "Who was the most impressive participant?" he replied, "Since my cooking is based on Korean, Japanese, and Western cuisines, I was impressed by Chef Jeong, a Chinese cuisine specialist, especially her 'batsu' (Chinese-style sweet and sour pork)." He praised her, saying, "I remember being surprised, thinking, 'How did she make this dish with dried radish greens?'"
