Yangsan City Holds the 45th White Cane Safety Day Ceremony The 45th White Cane Safety Day Ceremony in Yangsan City.

White Cane Day was proclaimed on October 15, 1980, by the World Blind Union to protect the rights of visually impaired people and to raise social awareness and consideration. Every year, commemorative ceremonies and related events are held around October 15.

The White Cane Day event, attended by about 220 visually impaired individuals, their families, and volunteers, began with congratulatory performances by the ‘Yangsan Bitsori Pungmuldan,’ a group composed of visually impaired people, and children from the Forest Kindergarten. The ceremony continued with the reading of the White Cane Charter, the presentation of white canes, awards for contributors to the welfare of the visually impaired, and the delivery of sponsorship funds.

The second part of the event featured a welfare promotion contest for the visually impaired (a harmony festival), including a sogo drum performance by seniors from the Visually Impaired Daycare Center, a fusion janggu drum performance, a singing contest among members of the Visually Impaired Association, and a raffle, offering a variety of activities.

Chairman Jeong Dong-go said, “I hope that, as symbolized by the white cane, physical disabilities will not become obstacles to opportunity and ability, and that visually impaired people will live with confidence.”

Kim Ok-rang, Director of Culture and Welfare, who attended on behalf of Mayor Na Dong-yeon, conveyed words of encouragement, saying, “Yangsan City will focus its administrative efforts on guaranteeing the rights of the visually impaired and creating an inclusive society where visually impaired people can live safe lives.”
