The city of Goyang Special City in Gyeonggi Province has called for an end to the abuse of power, accusing the city council of holding the mayor and the city executive branch hostage with the budget while thoroughly neglecting regional development.
On the 18th, Goyang City, through spokesperson Shin Cheol-sang, stated, "In May, the city signed a win-win agreement with the city council, but just days later, the entire budget for 14 major service projects aimed at Goyang's development was cut," and criticized, "Can it really be called win-win when they shout cooperation in front but cut the budget behind our backs?"
Spokesperson Shin Sang-cheol said, "Although the city council chairman should be neutral, on the 4th, Kim Un-nam, chairman of the Goyang City Council, unilaterally criticized the mayor and the executive branch in a 20-minute greeting speech, and the mayor's remarks were interrupted by loud voices from the start," adding, "If cooperation and win-win require the humiliation and one-sided concession of the city administration leaders, then this is by no means true cooperation."
Regarding the agenda on the sale of the Kintex hotel site, he emphasized, "No one is unaware of how important the MICE industry is to Goyang," and added, "The urgent agenda on the sale of the Kintex hotel site is currently pending in the city council, and the damages caused by the time wasted are being passed directly onto the citizens of Goyang."
Regarding the 2024 second supplementary budget review conducted at the 289th Goyang City Council extraordinary session, he pointed out, "Budgets essential for building maintenance, the basic urban plan, and road construction plans, as well as legally mandated budgets, were cut," and criticized, "Since the city council chairman and all four standing committees are currently held by the Democratic Party, they should be partners in city administration, but instead, they are using their power to cut budgets and stall projects essential to city governance."
The city stated, "Today, including the mayor, Goyang city officials strongly condemn the Goyang City Council, which is blocking the future and development of Goyang on behalf of the citizens who earnestly wish for the city's progress," and added, "The city council must not forget that both the city and the council exist for the citizens of Goyang. The city must carry out administration, the council must provide sound checks and balances, and each of us must fulfill our responsibilities while keeping the citizens in mind."
