"Money Withdrawn from Lost Transportation Card" Reported
Sent for Embezzlement Charges
Transferred Department After Detection... Currently on Leave
An employee at a police station was found to have embezzled approximately 8 million won in balance from transportation cards reported as lost property.
On the 18th, the Yeongdeungpo Police Station in Seoul announced that a woman in her 50s, Ms. A, was sent to the prosecution in July on charges of embezzlement during the course of her duties. According to the report, Ms. A worked for several years as an administrative officer in the Crime Prevention and Order Response Division at Dongjak Police Station and is accused of embezzling about 8 million won from the balances of approximately 500 transportation cards received as lost property.
It was investigated that Ms. A embezzled the money by transferring the transportation card balances to her own account via a charging device. In March, the police received a report from a citizen stating, "Money disappeared from my lost transportation card," and by tracking the withdrawal records of the card, they uncovered Ms. A's crime. Ms. A has since been transferred to another department and is currently on leave. The police plan to decide soon on the disciplinary action and its severity against Ms. A.
