The Gwangju Seo-gu Council (Chairman Jeon Seung-il) announced on the 18th that at the 1st plenary session of the 326th extraordinary meeting, it adopted the "Resolution Urging the Passage of Legislation for the Reduction and Management of Microplastics," which was proposed by Representative Kim Tae-jin.

Representative Kim Tae-jin stated, "As the use of plastic gradually increases, humans ingest an amount of microplastics equivalent to one credit card every week," and added, "Microplastics are affecting water quality in oceans and rivers, threatening ecosystems and all living organisms."

Kim also said, "However, the current regulations on plastics and microplastics in our country are very insufficient."

This resolution urges the government and the National Assembly to pass a "Special Act on Microplastics" to reduce the production and consumption of plastics, thereby protecting a sustainable environment and the health of the people.

The adopted resolution will be delivered to the President, the Prime Minister, the Speaker of the National Assembly, the National Assembly, each political party, and relevant government ministries.

Earlier, in September, the National Assembly proposed the "Special Act on Microplastics." The special act includes provisions for conducting surveys on the status of microplastics, regulating their use and discharge, and promoting technologies for reduction and removal, establishing a comprehensive response system.
